POSITION SUMMARY
The Anaesthetic Registrar is directly responsible to the attending Anaesthetic Consultant for day-to-day patient management, and ultimately to the Chief Medical Officer. They will provide the day-to-day clinical management of patients under the care and direction of the Consultant Staff of the Department of Anaesthesia to ensure a high quality of patient care. The Anaesthetic Registrar will undertake administrative duties for the Department under the direction of the Consultant Staff to ensure that the Department is run efficiently.
RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES
The following duties are inclusive of but not limited to the following:
1. Delivery of Service
• Provide high quality clinical care both in-hours and after-hours under the supervision of Consultant Anaesthetists.
• Provide perioperative and care to all patients in GV Health
- Assess and formulate management plans for patients referred to the Department for consultation
- Communicate assessment and management decisions to the appropriate Anaesthetic Consultant and referring team
- Review postoperative patients and communicate with the Anaesthetic Consultant and referring team
• Provide resuscitation and trauma management to all patients in GV Health
• Provide care to patients in all areas of GV Health, including the Emergency Department and the Intensive Care Unit when required to do so
• Provide analgesia and anaesthesia services to patients in the birth suite
• Participate in the Acute Pain Service daily ward round ensuring that all patients that require review are seen, and pain management issues are addressed
• Participate in the Anaesthetic Pre-Assessment Clinics
2. Provision of high quality, safe clinical care for consumers
• Ensure patients, families/representatives or carers are provided with timely information and are involved in decision making about their care planning and treatment
• Comply with best practice healthcare standards, legislation, and GV Health’s Clinical Governance Framework and clinical practice guidelines
• Maintain accurate and current clinical records; documentation should meet professional and legal standards and those of GV Health. This to include the relevant standards for medication prescriptions.
• Ensure an effective discharge from hospital or services that reflects the needs of the consumer
• Uphold and protect patient rights, maintain strict confidentiality, and continually practice to the principles of open disclosure
• Assist in enabling patient feedback and complaints to be responded to appropriately so that issues are resolved, and quality and safe clinical care is provided
3. Develop and maintain collaborative relationships with all disciplines
• Collaborate and communicate with all members of the health care team to achieve best patient outcomes
• Respect the decisions and actions of others
• Contribute to interdisciplinary team meetings to facilitate patient care goals
4. Support and participate in evidence-based programs to evaluate and improve the quality of patient care and outcomes
• Actively participate in the quality improvement activities of the department, including identifying where improvements can be made to the quality of patient care
• Participate in clinical audits, research, process redesign and accreditation against healthcare standards to ensure ongoing clinical practice improvement and the quality of patient care
