About the role:

We are seeking an experienced Speech Pathologist for a 6 month position to support our three Aged Care facilities with the implementation of the Strengthened Aged Care Quality Standard 6: Food and nutrition (2025).

This role will sit within the wider Speech Pathology team at GV Health Hospital, Shepparton and will include Clinical Supervision and access to Senior Supports. A background in Aged Care, working collaboratively with Food Services and Dietetics, as well as quality improvement/project management is desirable.

 

Standard 6 focuses on working with older people to find out what they like to eat and drink. It applies only to residential care homes:

The key topics in strengthened Quality Standard 6 are:

  • Working with older people in your care to create an enjoyable food, drink and dining experience
  • Monitoring and continuously improving your food and refreshment service
  • Developing and reviewing menus with older people and relevant health professionals
  • Making sure older people have choice about what, when, where and how they eat and drink
  • Supporting older people to access nutritious snacks and drinks (including water) at all times
  • Making sure there are opportunities for older people to share food and drinks with their visitors.

This role will work with the Aged Care Services within GV Health at Grutzner House (Shepparton), Waranga (Rushworth) and Parkvilla (Tatura) and the Food Services Dietitians and GV Health Food Services to align with the Strengthened Aged Care Standards (2025), through a consultative planned approach.

 

Examples of aspects for inclusion:

  • Develop and embed training for staff to recognise and act on signs of dysphagia
  • Ensure referral pathways are adequate to access appropriate speech pathology support, including timely use of screening assessments
  • Support implementation processes for a resident's mealtime support plan are embedded
  • Support the development of review processes for the resident's mealtime support plan
  • Ensure that there is adequate and timely ongoing training for staff
